Improve vocabulary with imagery and sound

Improve your vocabulary with imagery

For many people, creating a visual image is a very helpful tool for remembering information. You can use this sort of imagery when learning words to improve vocabulary. However, this approach does not work with all kinds of words. Words that denote tangible objects are often easier to visualize than words that denote ideas.

It is definitely easier to conjure up an image of a "debutante" who is a young girl entering the social world, than "deceit" which is a deception or dishonest action.

The first time you read a word's definition, try to make a visual image of it right away. Then repeat the word to yourself a few times while visualizing the image. When you are able to see a word's image in your mind, you are more likely to retain this word in your vocabulary.

Although this approach does not work too well for abstract words, there are other approaches to use for such words, which will be discussed in the other lessons.

Improve your vocabulary with sound

When you come across an unfamiliar word and you look it up in the dictionary, don’t just look at the meaning. Check the pronunciation as well, and then say the word out loud a few times. This will familiarize you with the word, and you will be able to use the word in spoken conversation in the future.

Ultimate Vocabulary software includes an audio feature that lets you hear new words spoken out loud. Not only will you improve your vocabulary, but you will also feel confident using these words in conversation.
